INTERNET SET-UP INSTRUCTIONS
High Speed Internet set-up for Windows 95 & 98
System recommended requirements and house wiring
- A category five twisted-pair cable runs from the entrance of NorthStar Access lines to the modem.
- A Pentium based computer with at least 32 megabits of random access memory and running at least 133-megahertz and a 10 megabit or 10/100 megabit Ethernet network interface card.
- Operating system should be Windows 95 or higher.
- Your web browser should be current.
Setting up your computer for Windows 95 or Windows 98
- Right Click on Network Neighborhood
- Select “Properties”
- Click on TCP/IP for your Network Interface card installed in your computer.
- Select “Properties”
- Select IP Address tab. Make sure “Specify an IP address” is clicked. Now enter your IP address that was given to you with our service from NorthStar Access into the IP Address box.
- Make sure your Subnet Mask is 255.255.255.0. Enter if it doesn’t appear.
- Click on the “Gateway Tab”
- Type in your first three groups of numbers given to you from your NorthStar Access IP Address and add “254” to the end. Example: xxxxxxxxx.xxxxxxxxx.xxxx.254. Then click the “Add” button.
- Click on the “DNS Configuration Tab”
- Make sure your “Enable DNS” is clicked.
- Type in “sherbtel” into the “Host:” box and type in “net” into the “Domain” box.
- NorthStar Access has a Primary and Secondary DNS Server IP Addresses and they are 208.38.65.37 is the Primary which is entered into the “DNS Server Search Order” box first and click the “Add” button. Then secondary is 208.38.65.35 is the secondary and is entered into the “DNS Server Search Order” box second and then click the “Add” button.
- Click on the “WINS Configuration” tab
- Make sure the “Disable WINS Resolution” is clicked.
- Now click on the “OK” button.
- Click on the “Access Control” tab.
- Make sure the “User-level access control” option is clicked. This protects your computer. It is not necessary to type anything into the List of Users box.
- Click on the Identification tab and make sure your computer has a unique name for the “Computer Name” and a unique name for your “Workgroup”.
- Click on the OK button. Your computer should be restarted at this point.
- Your computer has now mapped the IP address to the Network Interface Card in your computer. However, you will need to make the necessary changes to your Web Browser and E-mail to reflect this method of using the Internet.
Below are the steps needed to make the necessary changes to your Web Browser.
The goal of this next procedure it remove all references to a dialup connection.
Your dialup connection will now be a LAN connection and we want to tell our programs to use this LAN connection instead of the
dialup connection.
- If you have Internet Explorer on your desktop then Right Click on the Icon.
- Next, Click on your Properties option.
- Next Click on the Connections tab.
- If you currently have a dialup service, you will the name in the "Dial-up settings" box. Under that box are three options.
You want the option of "Never dial a connection". Next, Click on the items in the "Dial-up settings" box and remove them.
If you ever need to use a dial-up connection again at some time you will need to add it to your computer and select the"Dial whenever a network connection is not present" option.
- Click on the LAN Settings at the bottom of the "Connection" tab.
- Make sure that you have the "Automatically detect settings" option is checked and nothing else on this tab.
Then click OK on all the tabs. Your browser is now ready for the Internet.
- If you have a Inbox option on your desktop. Right click and select properties. Locate your E-mail option in the Services tab
dialogue box and click on your E-mail option and click properties.
- Next go to the Connection tab and select the "I use a LAN connection". Then click on OK until you are out.
- If you use Outlook Express for your E-mail, then open the program and then go to Tools, Options and then Connection tab.
Verify your Internet connections option, it may be set to use your Web browser settings. To verify this you can hit the change
button and make sure there is no dialup options checked.
Also in Outlook Express you have the Tools, Accounts. Select the proper Mail account and then click the properties option.
Go to the Connection tab and verify you have the option "Always connect to the account using" Local Area Network.
- If you use Outlook you will have the Tools and Services option to verify your Connections.
- If you are using Netscape as your browser you will need to go to the Start button on your Windows desktop, Settings,
Control Panel and double click on the Internet Options Icon. Within this Icon you will make the necessary changes to our connection.
Changing from the Dial-up connection to the LAN Connection.
Now you should be ready to browse the Internet and send E-mails.
Notes:
Always make sure you leave the ETHERset turned on. If your computer is turned off the Network LED will be AMBER.
If you want to network more than one PC you will need a HUB and will need
network interface cards for each PC and will need to map the IP address in both PCs.
